What Niche Should You Go Into?
One of the most common questions I get asked from beginning marketers is this: “What niche should I go into?” And there really is no easy answer for that. But, there are simple steps to evaluate which niche holds the greatest potential for your future online business success.
Step 1: Brainstorming Interests
The first step I always recommend to do is just take out a piece of paper and brainstorm all the things that you are interested in. You do not have to be an expert. You do not even have to know anything about it. Just something that you are interested in and that kind of fascinates you. Write it all down. Those do not have to be real niche ideas already, just write everything down that crosses your mind. You don’t need to write whole sentences, just write down keywords or three or four word phrases.
Step 2: Knowledge Aggregation
Then in the next step write down everything that you already have some kind of knowledge about. Again, that does not mean that you are an expert in that particular field, it just means that you have some kind of knowledge in that particular topic.
For example, if you have children then you have some kind of knowledge about parenting.
If you’ve ever traveled to China, then you have some kind of knowledge about traveling China.
If you ever worked as an ice cream seller, then you have some kind of knowledge about ice cream selling.
If you ever got admitted to a college then you have some kind of knowledge of college admission.
So you see, I’m really not talking about world-class expert level knowledge here, I’m just talking about any kind of knowledge on a given subject.
Write it all down. Again just short keywords or 3 to 5 word phrases are totally fine.
Step 3: Experience Aggregation
In the next step you write down everything where you have some kind of experience.
Maybe you have gone through a divorce.
Maybe you have found the love of your life.
Maybe have overcome a disease.
Maybe you were shy before and now you are not.
Any kind of problem that you solve, any kind of obstacle but you monster, write it all down.
You should now have a least one piece of paper that is full of words. If it’s more than one piece of paper that’s fine. Don’t take too long for this. 30 minutes ismore than enough.
Step 4: Narrowing Down Niche Choices
In the next step take a red pen or a yellow highlighter or something that has a different color and just make a circle around everything that you would enjoy making your niche.
For example if you have traveled to China and that trip was a really great trip then maybe you can create a small niche website about traveling to China.
If you’re a man then you can make traveling to China for men.
If you are a woman then you can make traveling to China for women.
If you like to go one party then you can make it travel and party in China for young women.
Anything like that.
Just let your mind really go crazy and be creative at this park in the game.
Later on we are really going to evaluate the different niches and see which ones might be profitable and which ones will be dead ends.
But this part in the process it’s really just about coming up with more and more niche ideas.
I suggest you take 45 minutes for this brainstorming session. And then you just put it all aside and come back the next day.
There are many more ways to find what niche is good for you, this is just the brainstorming session, there are other, more data-driven niche finding methods that I talk about in the How To Find A Niche MiniCourse.
